How to style it in your dining room

The details that decide whether it looks considered or just put there. Worth two minutes before you commit to a spot.

1. Pick the wall that faces or sits beside your main window, so the glass throws daylight back into the room instead of doubling a blank corner.
2. Tape a paper outline at the mirror's size to the wall and live with it for a day. The centre usually wants to land near eye level, about 57 to 60 inches off the floor.
3. Hanging it over furniture? Size it to roughly two thirds the width of the console, dresser or sofa underneath, so the two read as a pair.
4. Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of that furniture and the bottom of the frame. Any closer feels cramped, any further and they stop looking related.
5. Check what it reflects before you drill. A mirror repeats whatever faces it, so aim it at a plant, a lamp or a view, never a cluttered shelf or the back of a door.
6. In a narrow hallway, hang it on the long wall rather than the end wall. It widens the walk-through instead of stopping your eye dead at the end.
7. Put light near it. A pair of wall lights or a lamp to one side keeps the glass from going flat and grey once the sun goes down.
8. Renting? Lean a floor mirror against the wall, or use adhesive hooks rated well above the actual weight, and save the drill for a wall you own.
