How to style it in your living room

The details that decide whether it looks considered or just put there. Worth two minutes before you commit to a spot.

1. Measure the floor and the furniture footprint before you shop. Buying too small is the most common rug mistake, and it makes the whole room look shrunken.
2. In a living room, get at least the front legs of every seat onto the rug. All legs on is better if the budget allows, and it pulls the seating into one group.
3. Under a dining table, add 24 to 30 inches past the table edge on all sides, so chairs stay on the rug when they are pulled out.
4. In a bedroom, slide it under the lower two thirds of the bed so both sides give you something soft to stand on.
5. Leave an even border of bare floor around the edges, roughly 8 to 18 inches, so it reads as a deliberate choice rather than failed wall-to-wall carpet.
6. Choose pile by traffic. High pile and shag suit bedrooms and quiet corners; flatweave and low pile survive hallways and chairs being dragged.
7. Use an underlay. It stops the slipping, adds softness underfoot, and roughly doubles how long the rug lasts on a hard floor.
8. Rotate it twice a year and vacuum the back occasionally. Both take minutes and keep the pile even where sunlight and the sofa do their damage.
