How to style it in your living room

The details that decide whether it looks considered or just put there. Worth two minutes before you commit to a spot.

1. Choose your anchor piece first, usually the largest one, and centre it on whatever the wall serves: the sofa, the bed, the console.
2. Hang the centre of the arrangement 57 to 60 inches from the floor, which is gallery height and roughly average eye level.
3. Above a sofa or bed, keep the total width to about two thirds of the furniture below, with 6 to 10 inches of clear wall between them.
4. Building a gallery wall? Lay the whole thing out on the floor first, then keep spacing tight and consistent, 2 to 3 inches, so it reads as one shape rather than scattered frames.
5. Mix the scale on purpose. Two large pieces with three small ones looks collected; five identical frames in a row looks like a showroom.
6. Repeat one element across everything, a colour, a frame finish, a subject, and even a very mixed wall will feel intentional.
7. Give it light. A picture light or a lamp angled at the wall gives the room somewhere to look in the evening.
8. On plaster or rented walls, use adhesive strips rated above the real weight for lighter pieces, and find a stud for anything with glass in it.
